Programs of Change
At the heart of Impact lies many transformative programs that go beyond the conventional modalities of addiction treatment. Known for its unwavering commitment to the 12-step recovery process, Impact integrates these foundational approaches with innovative tracks designed to address the multifaceted challenges faced by those in recovery. Among these pioneering endeavors is the Post-Incarceration Syndrome (PICS) Group, a program tailored for individuals striving to rebuild their lives after incarceration.
A Legacy of Transformation
The inception of the PICS Group can be traced back to a unique assembly within Impact known as "The Knucklehead Group." Originally designed to confront and mend the maladaptive behaviors and attitudes of its members, this group laid the groundwork for what would eventually evolve into the PICS Group. It was in 2021, that Program Manager David Moore, himself an addict in recovery with experience in the criminal justice system, spearheaded a new generation of this specific type of healing.
Recognizing the profound need to address the specific challenges faced by individuals recently released from incarceration, Impact refined and expanded the program's focus. Today, the PICS Group stands as a testament to our innovative approach to treatment for anyone seeking help, regardless of their past.
The expansion of this program is currently one of our priorities, as nearly 80% of Impact's client population have been affected by the justice system in some form as a result of their addiction - be it through police encounters, probation, parole, incarceration, or similar experiences, either personally or through family and friends. As the parallels between a life of addiction and issues with law enforcement are often present, it would be short-sighted to not address these problems concurrently.
The Journey Through Post-Incarceration Syndrome
Post-Incarceration Syndrome (PICS) is a complex condition that affects individuals who have been incarcerated, characterized by symptoms that can impede one's ability to reintegrate into society successfully. The PICS Group at Impact is dedicated to addressing these challenges head-on through a 10-week curriculum that encompasses a series of groups aimed at educating participants on overcoming an institutionalized mindset, while also confronting the toxic elements of their attitudes and behavior.
The beginning of this is education on their own past, with a deconstruction of their motivations. All of this is based on pre-existing evidence-based curriculums contained within the workbook for Criminal and Addictive Thinking, published by the Minnesota Department of Corrections and Hazelden Publishing, and the Gorski-CENAPS Model of Relapse Prevention developed by Terrence T. Gorski. As our clients progress past the understanding of why their life was lived a certain way, they can then begin building a new life.
Educational Advancement: A Pathway to Freedom
A cornerstone of the PICS Group is its emphasis on education as a critical tool for reducing recidivism. Participants are encouraged to pursue a High School Equivalency Certificate or higher education during their time in the program. This approach is grounded in the understanding that education not only provides individuals with the skills needed for employment and self-sufficiency, but also fosters a sense of purpose and self-worth that is vital for long-term recovery.
Thanks to community partners and like-minded institutions like Flintridge Center, C.O.R.E., Pasadena City College, Los Angeles City College District, and many more, we are making it possible for our patients to do much more than just stop using drugs and alcohol. We are enabling them to build a better future.
Changing Lives, One Step at a Time
The PICS Group at Impact is more than just a program; it's a lifeline for individuals seeking to break free from the chains of their past. By addressing the unique challenges faced by those with a history of incarceration, Impact is not only helping individuals recover from addiction but is also empowering them to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose.
As Impact continues to build on its legacy of innovative and compassionate care, the PICS Group stands as a beacon of hope for those in search of a new beginning. Through education, 12-step recovery, and a dedicated support system, the PICS Group is changing lives one step at a time, and reinforcing our commitment to making a lasting impact on the individuals and communities it serves.
